Case Study of GPS Yield Mapping and GPS Crop Yield Data Processing
Background - GPS Yield Mapping case study
Farmer in Essex had been collecting GPS and crop yield data for over 5 years for
GPS yield mapping the details of high and low areas within fields and
farms. But he wanted more from his GPS crop yield data than the
software was allowing him
to process.
He wanted to easy see the important differences in yield between fields and
within fields from the GPS yield
data, to highlight the important differences that his yield
data shows, to better understand how the data can be used in field
management to maximise benefits of GPS
mapping services.
GPS Yield Mapping with GPS Crop Yield Data
Processing the GPS Crop Yield Data into GPS Yield Maps highlighted the following:-

- Yield monitors create huge amounts of GPS data that needs to be processed. Exact and useful differences between field cultivations, non inversion cultivations versus plough within the same field.
- Red areas on the field map are mostly due to rabbit & duck damage, reducing yields by more than 3t/ha. A loss in excess of £180 per acre versus the cost of preventing this damage.
- Lower crop yielding area in peninsular of north west field: rabbit damage. Evaluate lost yield versus cost of prevention.
- Heaviest crop yielding areas identified. Suggest GPS soil sampling to identify fertility of high yielding areas of fields versus low yielding areas.
By
compiling several years of yield maps, field areas that consistently
produce heavier yields, medium yields or lower yields can be
identified. For example
the map to right shows an average for 3 years
data, red areas are poorest yields and green heaviest crop yields.
